The system of bayonet pictures here was published in Carey's Bayonet Exercise and Skirmisher's Drill in 1861. It was intended "...for the use of the volunteers of the State of Virginia and the South..." Carey copied the popular French system of bayonet drill. This was the style of Bayonet fighting first used by French Chasseurs and Zouaves, and later adopted i n1851 for the entire French army. Some of the illustrations are identical to those used in other manuals which had borrowed the French method.
