17th Century Pike Drill

The 16th and 17th Century saw a new version of an old style of warfare.  The phalanx was revived, in a peculiar blend of pikes and muskets. Units of pikemen and units of musketeers fought each other and cavalrymen in the new style of warfare.  Turning and moving masses of men with long pikes was done through a complex drill.  We have been able to reproduce part of such a drill here. Unfortunately, we could only get half of the document.  The other half had been so marred that it was not reproducible.

The portion we have reproduced will give you a good idea of how men moved in those formations.  There are some great poses here for the hobbyist who wishes to make a miniature depicting that era.
