Clamping Molds

Two-piece molds must be clamped securely to prevent metal from leaking. Along with C clamps, several other types are in use.  As a rule, you can use plastic clamps on rubber and silicon molds. You can only use metal clamps on metal molds.  The metal molds get too hot for plastic, and cause it to melt or burn.

These plastic clamps do well with rubber and silicon molds.  Always place a piece of board on each half of the mold.  The reason we have two clamps on the bottom is that some molds leak after two or three pours.  This is a temporary problem.  It is often prevented by using two clamps.

Metal mold in its clamp.  The same clamps are used for the REB one-cavity metal molds. They keep the mold shut and provide a "floor" for the open bottom.  If you use these for several molds, get several clamps.  Some metal molds require a tighter fit than  others, and you may have to bend the sides of the clamp.  Do NOT use plastic clamps on metal molds!  Plastic will melt.  If you use other clamps, use METAL ones only, other pliers-type clamps or C clamps.
