German Tanks, World War I

Here are photographs of two British tanks, captured and used by the Germans in World War I.  Both had been repainted in German camouflage and given the "Iron Cross" national marking.

Most of the men in this photo are wearing Infantry-type field gear: bayonet, bread bag, canteen, mess kit, entrenching tool. Note the variety in footgear: puttees and boots.  The uniforms are worn and dusty.  The men atop the tank are wearing a visored cap and no field gear.  The absence of rifles and helmets indicates that this is a rear area.

This tank is disabled.  The track is broken, reveling its underside.  You can get a better understanding of how it ran through its rollers.  There is no way to see if the tank was disabled due to throwing the track, or more serious damage.
