The Nine Day Class

An Exercise in Attainment

Lesson 5 - Know yourself

Are we so much a mystery to ourselves that we do not know who we are? Much is made in pop psychology about people who do not know themselves. Really? People know themselves quite well. The only mysteries are a few small things, such as quirks of behavior. Most of whom we are is no mystery at all.

You know what you like and what you do not like. You know the music you like, the food you like, and the things you like to do. You know the kind of people you love, the kind of people you like, the people you dislike, and the people you avoid at all costs. Indeed! You also know the foods, music and other things you cannot stand! That is a lot of self-knowledge.

We can always learn more. The give and take of life reveals a lot to each of us. We get to test ourselves in real-life situations. That is how we learn more of our strengths, weaknesses and attitudes.

Some of ourselves is revealed in how people react to us. In others, we see ourselves reflected. Our friends and associates tell a lot about us. On some level, they are like us. Each one has one or more traits to which we are attracted.

We know how we feel about everything from government policies to the price of bread. It helps if we ask ourselves why we feel as we do. Sometimes, but not always ,there is a specific reason for our feelings.

You need realize one thing: all of your likes, dislikes, friends, acquaintances, enemies and such have one thing in common: YOU! This is the key to it all. Without you, there would be nothing to connect them. That alone is something to consider, since you are at the center of your own circumstances.

For the most part, you are no mystery to yourself. You know yourself quite well Only a few things about yourself are mysteries to you. Other than that, you are the one who knows yourself best

Meditation: Ponder yourself. Think of the things that make you happy. Consider what you like: foods, activities, people, places, and things. Run them through your mind gently. Ponder why they bring you joy. Meditate on the things you like to do, and the things you do well. Think of that something within you that causes you to enjoy them and succeed. Gently seek for your inner assets.

Thought for the Day: I know myself better than anyone else, and I appreciate myself more each day. The more I learn of myself, the more I appreciate myself.

Yesterdays Exercise: At a time when you can relax, take out the paper from yesterday. Look at it. There are your accomplishments and there are the disappointments. Now you must ask the big question: what was it that enabled you to accomplish those things, and what strength was it that allowed you to handle those disappointments? Is there a similar something that allowed you to accomplish things and to overcome disappointment? This exercise reveals your strengths. It shows you good things about yourself. You will discover some strengths that you may not have known were in you.
