Crew Changes

Those who remember us from the old Trollwise days will undoubtedly remember Oddvar and Freja, Freja had come to us before we started publishing. She arrived as a tiny, five week old calico kitten. At the time, she was too small to jump onto the bed without help. She became the champion jumper of the house. She came to us 17 years ago this past June.

Oddvar came in Summer of 1993. A neighbor found him and a sibling in a building in Brooklyn. He kept the other cat. We took the goofy little one-eyed grey kitten and named him Oddvar. He drove Freja and out other cats nuts. The little fellow was mischievous and full of energy. He used to like to get on top of the laser printer and watch the paper come out. Oddvar made the news a few times in Uncle Thorr’s Magazine. He had been with us for 14 years.

Oddvar and Freja were the mascots of the Trollwise Press and Uncle Thorr’s Magazine

Unfortunately, old age caught up with the two of them. Freja was a doddering old cat, but still made a small jump onto the couch. She was forgetful and slowing down like an old clock that is running out of time. She was not feeling well part of the time. Oddvar was skinny as a rail, despite an appetite. His elan had waned. He creaked slowly through the house.

We take these pets knowing that the time will come when we must see them off. They have lives much shorter than ours. While most pets are memorable, some are more loved than others. Oddvar and Freja were my favorites.

Since we restarted our publishing work, Oddvar would occasionally sit under the desk while I was printing. The desk where I bind was too high for him to jump, since he got old. He used to like to watch that. Freja occasionally would look at the printer, since we run it on the floor. In the old Trollwise days, both were all over the room while I was printing and binding and packaging.

Oddvar, Freya and Silver were put to sleep last month. They would not have lasted more than a week or two more, and we wanted to spare them the suffering.

            I miss those cats.

Silver, a Persian ,was inherited from Audrey’s aunt. We received him the weekend before 911. He is a goofy little cat. Though he looked like a fluff bunny, he was actually quite brave. Sadly, he had also been ill and was getting worse. We miss him, too.

May the Gods see to the safe and peaceful passing of Oddvar, Freja and Silver.
